Name Andy Fryer

Job role Senior Designer

How long have you been with 438? 5 years

Where were you before 438? Armstrong

Which clients do you work on? I have a hand in all clients

Hobbies? Football, travelling and music

What’s the favourite piece of work you’ve done at 438 and why?
Rebranding The Defence Works – an online data security training platform – was rewarding as it was a chance to create an identity from scratch and the end result didn’t stray from the original concept. Also designing the new-look packaging for Eurohike and seeing it on shelves in stores was satisfying.

Who has inspired you most in your career?
I’ve not been inspired by a particular designer. I like to keep an eye out for what other designers and agencies are doing to keep up with trends and for fresh inspiration.

What’s on your desk at work?
A 27-inch iMac, a lamp and a Batman mug (that needs refilling!)

What was the last book you read?
Shoe Dog: A memoir by the creator of Nike. Very interesting read about his struggles to get Nike off the ground to become the massive brand it is today.

What is your favourite holiday destination?
It’s a toss up between California and Florida, but Orlando is the place I’ve visited the most. The experiences and ‘imagineering’ at the Disney theme parks have definitely influenced aspects of my creativity.

What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
Love American diners.

If you could meet one famous person – past or present – who would it be?
Tom Hanks. He’s my favourite actor, been in some of my favourite movies and always comes across a nice guy.

How do you relax?
Netflix (and chill?) with the Mrs, playing FIFA or playing guitar.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
We’ve recently implemented Flexi-time at 438 and that has had a great benefit on my health. We’re guilty of thinking the later you work, the more hard-working you appear – but I strongly believe if you implement an efficient process, you can be more productive in a shorter period of time. Flexible finishing times allow for more time in the evenings to exercise, play football and eat dinner earlier with family (and don’t forget the boring chores!)

Tell us one thing about yourself that no one else knows.
Back in ye olde days of MySpace I was invited to a band audition for a record label by the management company of Busted & McFly. After lining up alongside a bunch of stage-schoolers and bred-to-be-musicians, I realised I was well out of my comfort zone and was better off behind a Mac in a design studio than behind the mic in a recording studio.
